In medicine and (clinical) genetics preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is considered an alternative to prenatal diagnosis. Its main advantage is that it avoids selective pregnancy termination as the method which ensures a pregnancy of the desired gender. PGD thus is an adjunct to assisted reproductive technology, and requires in vitro fertilization (IVF) to obtain oocytes or embryos for evaluation. ProcessEggs are harvested from the woman and fertilized. Each embryo is tested for sex, and only embryos of the correct sex are implanted back into the woman with in vitro fertilization. While this method is more invasive than most others and more expensive, costing an average of $20,000 USD in the United States, success is practially guaranteed. Resources
